About Sigiriya – The Lion Rock - Sigiriya, Central Province, Sri Lanka
Sigiriya, known as the Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic and historically significant sites and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dramatic rock rises nearly 200 meters vertically above the flat landscape and served as King Kassapa's royal residence and fortress in the 5th century. At the base, visitors are met with advanced water gardens and symmetrical layouts, showcasing a remarkable understanding of ancient engineering and urban planning. The ascent involves stairs and narrow passages that lead past the famous Sigiriya frescoes – delicate and colorful murals of graceful women, preserved in a natural rock alcove. Along the way, you also pass the Mirror Wall, whose polished surface once reflected the king's image and where visitors through centuries have left inscriptions. The entrance to the summit is marked by the monumental Lion Gate, where only the massive lion paws remain. At the top of the rock, you'll find the ruins of the palace, pools, and vantage points offering breathtaking panoramic views of jungles, lakes, and plains – an experience that blends nature, history, and architecture in one.
