Medellín month by month: Annual festivals and events worth traveling for
Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Medellín offers pleasant warmth year-round. Temperatures rarely rise above 26°C during the day or fall below 15°C at night, creating an ideal climate for both locals and visitors. Although the weather is stable, there are special times of the year when the city truly blossoms – especially during iconic festivals or if you want to avoid the rainiest months.
Best time for a day trip
Ending or beginning the year in Medellín has its advantages. December transforms the city into a light-filled experience with the famous Alumbrados Navideños – a Christmas light spectacle that typically lasts until the first or second week of January. As a predominantly Catholic country, the Christmas atmosphere is ubiquitous, from decorated public parks to impressive displays in shopping centers. The period from December to March is also the driest season of the year, with only five to ten rainy days per month.
Best time for festivals
If you plan your trip around a festival, Feria de Las Flores (the Flower Festival) should be at the top of the list. This colorful event lasts up to ten days and celebrates Colombia’s flower and orchid growers – the country has more than 4,000 orchid species! Among concerts, flower exhibitions, and parties, the Desfile de Silleteros is a highlight, where locals carry lavishly flower-decorated displays on their backs from Santa Elena to Medellín. Summer also brings the International Tango Festival, Poetry Festival, and Colombiamoda fashion week.
Best time for a good deal
During Medellín’s two rainy seasons, you can expect rain 15 to 20 days per month. However, this rarely means all-day rain – often it is just a short afternoon shower lasting a couple of hours. With an umbrella, rain jacket, or a local poncho, you can still enjoy the city, and in return you can save money on both flights and hotels during this period.
