How to enjoy Mexico City on a budget
Mexico City is a city of neighborhoods, so it is important to choose the right one as your base, as it has a big impact on your budget. While you should visit the fantastic areas of Condesa, Roma, and Polanco, these exclusive districts are the most expensive in the city due to the influx of foreign remote workers.
Instead, you can find accommodation in neighborhoods such as Coyoacán in the southern part of the city. Coyoacán, where Frida Kahlo lived most of her life, has a bohemian atmosphere with lower prices and offers a great insight into local life. Although it is a bit farther out, it is well connected by public transport and has many attractions such as Kahlo’s Casa Azul and the lively Coyoacán Market.
Another area that balances affordability and safety is Centro Histórico – it has some inexpensive accommodation options and is home to some of the city’s most popular attractions.
Budget transportation
Mexico City has one of the cheapest metros in the world, where a single ride costs only M$5 (US$0.25). Buy a single ticket at the station ticket office, or get a Transit Card for M$15 (US$0.75) and top it up as needed. The Metrobús costs M$6 (US$0.30) per ride and can be paid for with a Transit Card.
Food experiences without breaking the budget
Mexico City is a culinary giant – and the best part about its food scene is that you don’t need to eat at fine restaurants to eat well. The world-famous street food is extremely cheap (think M$10 / US$0.50 per taco) – so cheap that it is often more economical to eat out than to cook at home.
