Blyde River Canyon

Blyde River Canyon is one of the world's largest green canyon systems and one of South Africa's most iconic natural areas. The canyon stretches over more than 25 kilometers through Mpumalanga's dramatic highlands and is known for its unique combination of deep gorges, lush subtropical vegetation, and expansive views. Along the Panorama Route, you'll find some of the area's most famous viewpoints, including the Three Rondavels, where round rock formations rise above the Blyde River, and God's Window, which offers views extending far over the Lowveld on clear days. Bourke’s Luck Potholes showcase the forces of nature in the form of cylindrical rock pools created by millennia of erosion. For active travelers, the area offers a variety of hiking trails that lead through forests, open savannah landscapes, and along the edge of the canyon with constantly changing views. Down in the canyon, a boat cruise on the Blyde Dam provides an entirely different experience, where steep rock walls, still waters, and opportunities to see hippos and crocodiles create a serene contrast to the viewpoints above. Blyde River Canyon combines accessible sightseeing with genuine nature experiences and is an essential stop on a journey through northeastern South Africa.
