Carcassonne – Europe's Fairytale Fortress

Carcassonne is one of Europe's most impressive medieval complexes and an outstanding example of fortified architecture in Occitanie in southern France. The historic district, La Cité de Carcassonne, is surrounded by a rare double ring wall with more than 50 towers, stretching almost three kilometers and creating a dramatic sight even before entering through its gates. At the heart of the city is Château Comtal, a massive 12th-century count's castle, where visitors can wander through defensive corridors, inner courtyards, and exhibitions that tell the story of the Cathars, the Albigensian Crusade, and the battles between local rulers and the French crown. Carcassonne is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptionally well-preserved structure and historical significance. Inside the walls, cobbled streets wind between medieval houses, small squares, and the church Basilique Saint-Nazaire, known for its stained glass windows. When night falls, the illumination highlights the towers and walls, giving evening walks an almost magical atmosphere. The visit is complete with the local cuisine, where classic cassoulet from the region is served in the city's traditional restaurants.
