Drakensberg

The Drakensberg Mountains, also known as uKhahlamba-Drakensberg, form a dramatic basalt wall along the border between South Africa and Lesotho and are among southern Africa's most striking mountain landscapes. The steep Great Escarpment rises to over 3,000 meters, creating a rugged highland plateau with deep gorges, green valleys, and jagged peaks. The area is renowned for iconic summit hikes like Amphitheatre, Tugela Gorge, and Cathedral Peak, where hikers are rewarded with sweeping views and some of the continent's tallest waterfalls. Along the lower slopes of the mountains, well-marked trails lead to rushing rivers and hidden waterfalls, ideal for peaceful picnics and nature photography. In sandstone caves, hundreds of San rock paintings offer a rare glimpse into the ancient cultural history of the region. Drakensberg is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where biodiversity, raw mountain nature, and early human traces converge in a landscape that feels both awe-inspiring and untouched.
