Fez

Fez is Morocco's spiritual and cultural center and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. The city's historic heart, Fez el-Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Arab world. The medina is a dense network of over 9,000 narrow alleys where daily life unfolds without modern traffic, and the senses are constantly challenged by calls to prayer, the scent of spices, and the sounds of traditional craftsmanship. A guided tour through the medina opens doors to hidden riads, historic madrasas like Bou Inania, and local workshops where techniques are passed down through generations. A central highlight is Al Quaraouiyine University, founded in 859, which still operates and is regarded as the oldest existing university in the world. The famous tanneries in the Chouara district offer a rare glimpse into traditional leather dyeing methods using natural pigments, performed the same way for centuries. Fez is not experienced as a museum but as a living city where history, religion, trade, and everyday life merge into an authentic and intense atmosphere.
