About Kotor – Balkan Medieval Fjord - Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor is dramatically situated at the end of the Bay of Kotor, often referred to as Europe’s southernmost fjord, where steep mountain slopes rise directly from the deep blue Adriatic Sea. The city’s historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands as an exceptionally well-preserved medieval town with narrow cobbled streets, Romanesque churches, palaces, and small atmospheric squares hidden behind sturdy city walls. Over centuries, Kotor has been an important maritime hub, which is clearly reflected in its architecture and the Maritime Museum that tells the stories of local captains, trade ships, and maritime traditions. One of the city's absolute highlights is the hike up more than 1,300 steps to the fortress of San Giovanni, winding up the mountainside above the town. The trek is demanding, but the reward is a spectacular panoramic view of the entire bay, the old town, and the surrounding mountains. The combination of dramatic nature, authentic Balkan atmosphere, and rich historical heritage makes Kotor an exceptionally integrated destination where culture, landscape, and vibrant city life blend together in a truly unique way.
