Lake Bled

Lake Bled sits like a living postcard in the Julian Alps and is one of Slovenia's most recognizable and atmospheric natural areas. The lake's distinctive turquoise-blue color changes with the light, while the surrounding mountains and forests reflect in the water. In the middle of the lake lies Bled Island, Slovenia's only natural island, crowned by the Church of the Assumption of Mary. The island is reached by traditional pletna boats, still rowed by local boat builders and rowers—a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. Visitors can climb the 99 stone steps up to the church and ring the famous wishing bell. Along the lake's shore runs a 6 km path, perfect for tranquil walks and cycling, with constant views of the island, the castle, and the Alps. High on the cliff above the lake stands Bled Castle, Slovenia's oldest fortress, offering some of the region's most photographed panoramic views. The castle houses a museum, wine cellar, and historic courtyards.
