Lake Toba

Lake Toba is the world's largest volcanic lake and one of Indonesia's most remarkable natural areas, created by a colossal supervolcanic eruption about 74,000 years ago. The vast caldera stretches over more than 100 kilometers, forming a dramatic landscape of steep green mountain slopes, mist-shrouded heights, and crystal-clear freshwater. In the middle of the lake lies Samosir Island, a cultural hub for the Batak people, where traditional villages with distinctive saddle-roofed houses are still used for ceremonies, music, and daily life. Visitors can explore ancient stone chairs, local markets, and small museums that showcase the history and rituals of the Batak kings.
