Lençóis Maranhenses – Brazil's Desert Lakes

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil is a natural wonder unlike anything else in the world. The endless, stark white sand dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, resembling a desert at first glance. However, during the rainy season, the landscape changes dramatically. Rainwater collects between the dunes, creating hundreds of temporary freshwater lagoons in vibrant shades of turquoise, blue, and green. These lagoons are crystal-clear, pleasantly warm, and perfect for swimming after hiking through the soft sand. The park's dynamic nature means that the dunes and lagoons are constantly shifting in shape and location, making each visit unique. The adventure often begins in Barreirinhas or Atins, from where guided jeep tours, dune treks, and sunset excursions take you deep into the national park. When the sun sets, the dunes turn golden and pink, and the silence is broken only by the wind—an almost surreal experience that feels like stepping into another world.
