Lençóis Maranhenses – Brazil’s Sands and Lagoons

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil is a remarkable natural phenomenon where desert and water coexist side by side. The park spans more than 1,500 km² with endless, chalk-white sand dunes shaped by Atlantic winds. During the rainy season, typically from January to June, rainwater collects between the dunes, creating hundreds of clear freshwater lagoons in striking shades of turquoise and emerald green. These lagoons are naturally pristine and perfect for swimming, often featuring pleasantly warm water. Most visits begin in the town of Barreirinhas, from where 4x4 vehicles take travelers deep into the park via sandy tracks and rivers. With local guides, visitors gain access to remote lagoons, expansive views, and sunsets that transform the dunes into golden waves. The lack of vegetation in large parts of the area accentuates the surreal atmosphere, making Lençóis Maranhenses one of Brazil’s most photographed and unique landscapes – a place unlike any other destination in the world.
