Petra – The Stone City of the Nabataeans

Petra is Jordan’s most iconic landmark and one of the Middle East's most important archaeological wonders, carved directly into rose-colored sandstone by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago. The city was a central hub on the ancient trade routes between Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean, which is still evident in its advanced architecture and sophisticated irrigation systems. The visit begins with the dramatic walk through the Siq – a narrow, winding gorge flanked by cliffs up to 80 meters high. Along the way, traces of shrines and carvings are revealed before the iconic moment when Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) suddenly comes into view. Inside Petra, an immense archaeological site awaits with hundreds of tombs, temples, sacrificial altars, and Roman ruins, all carved directly into the rock. A challenging but unforgettable hike leads up to the Monastery Ad-Deir, where the view over the surrounding desert landscape is among the most spectacular in Jordan. In the evening, the area transforms during Petra by Night, when the Siq and Treasury are illuminated by thousands of candles, accompanied by traditional Bedouin music. Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a rare combination of breathtaking nature, historical depth, and an almost mythical atmosphere, making the visit an experience far beyond the ordinary.
