Retezat Mountains

The Retezat Mountains in western Romania are one of Europe's most rugged and authentic mountain areas, forming the heart of Retezat National Park, Romania's oldest national park. The area is especially renowned for its more than 80 alpine glacial lakes, scattered among steep valleys and high granite peaks. Bucura Lake, the country's largest alpine lake, serves as a natural hub for hikers and is surrounded by some of the park's most spectacular hiking trails. The trails lead through blooming alpine meadows, where over 1,000 plant species thrive, and further up to notable peaks like Peleaga and Retezat Peak, which rise above 2,500 meters. Retezat is known for its remarkable tranquility and minimal human interference, offering a rare sense of true wilderness. Camping in designated zones allows visitors to experience clear nights, where the stars reflect in the serene waters of the lakes. The national park also hosts one of Europe's highest concentrations of large predators, including brown bears, lynxes, and golden eagles, making the area a unique destination for both nature photographers and experienced mountain hikers.
