Romantic Road

Romantic Road is Germany's most iconic holiday route, stretching approximately 460 km from Würzburg in Franconia to Füssen at the foot of the Bavarian Alps. The route follows old trade paths through vineyards along the Main River, lush valleys, and some of southern Germany's best-preserved historic towns. In Würzburg, visitors can explore the impressive Residenz before heading to Rothenburg ob der Tauber – one of Europe's most authentic medieval settings with intact city walls, watchtowers, and colorful half-timbered houses. Further south, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen feature well-preserved town centers; Nördlingen is particularly unique as it is located in a meteor crater. In Augsburg, the route's Roman roots and renaissance history can be felt before the landscape gradually becomes more alpine. The journey’s finale is Füssen and the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle, which dramatically towers over the Alps and served as the inspiration for Disney’s fairytale castle. Romantic Road is perfect for road trips or cycling, combining cultural heritage, local gastronomy, and stunning nature experiences at a leisurely pace.
