Romantic Road

The Romantic Road is one of Germany’s most iconic and historic travel routes, stretching approximately 460 km through Bavaria from the wine city of Würzburg to the alpine town of Füssen. The route follows old trade roads and takes you through a unique chain of well-preserved medieval towns, baroque churches, and open cultural landscapes. A highlight for many is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, known for its intact city walls, towers, and cobblestone streets, where the architecture has remained almost unchanged since the Middle Ages. Along the way, you’ll also pass through towns like Dinkelsbühl and Augsburg, which bear witness to Roman and imperial history. The journey culminates in the Bavarian alpine region at Neuschwanstein Castle, King Ludwig II’s fairytale residence, dramatically perched above valleys, lakes, and forested mountains. The Romantic Road is ideal for road trips but is also popular among cyclists, as the route is clearly marked and ranges from vineyards and river valleys to alpine foothills. Gastronomically, the area offers classic Bavarian dishes like bratwurst, schnitzel, and käsespätzle, as well as local wines in the north and beer traditions in the south, often served in atmospheric guesthouses.
