About Rwenzori Mountain Range - Rwenzori National Park, Uganda

The Rwenzori Mountains, often called the Mountains of the Moon, stretch dramatically along the border between Uganda and DR Congo, offering one of Africa's most unique and challenging mountain landscapes. The range is known for its rare equatorial glaciers, which still crown its peaks despite their location near the equator, as well as an extremely diverse ecosystem that changes significantly with altitude. Hikes lead through humid lowland jungle, bamboo forest, alpine moors, and surreal landscapes dominated by giant lobelias and giant groundsels. The iconic Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley is a pinnacle for experienced climbers and requires technical trekking over glaciers and cliffs. Rwenzori Mountains National Park is also an important biodiversity hotspot, home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, forest elephants, and over 200 bird species. The area's remote location, shifting climate, and rugged terrain make the experience intense and authentic—perfect for travelers seeking serious trekking adventures, nature photography, and one of Africa's most unspoiled mountain experiences.
