Saxon Switzerland – Sandstone Cliffs

Saxon Switzerland, or Sächsische Schweiz, is an extraordinary natural area in eastern Germany, renowned for its dramatic sandstone mountains, deep gorges, and dense forests along the Elbe River. The landscape, shaped over millions of years, features a network of striking rock formations, freestanding pillars, and plateaus that make the region uniquely distinct in Europe. The most famous landmark is the Bastei Bridge – a historic stone bridge from the 19th century, perched between cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Elbe Valley and the national park's wild terrain. The region boasts hundreds of marked hiking trails, including classic routes through the Schwedenlöcher Gorge and up to remarkable viewpoints like Königstein Fortress. Saxon Switzerland is also an internationally recognized hub for traditional free climbing, where climbing is done without metal gear to preserve the rock.
