About Transfăgărășan - Carpathians, Romania

Transfăgărășan is one of Romania's most spectacular natural areas and an icon among the world's most beautiful mountain roads. This legendary alpine road cuts dramatically through the Făgăraș Mountains in the Carpathians, connecting southern and northern Romania via a series of steep climbs, tunnels, and iconic hairpin bends. The road reaches its highest point at over 2,040 meters altitude, where the climate changes, the air turns cool, and the view opens up to a rugged alpine landscape marked by cliffs, snowfields, and deep valleys. A central highlight is Lake Bâlea, a glacial lake with crystal-clear water, surrounded by sharp mountain peaks, serving as both a natural viewpoint and a resting spot midway along the route. Along Transfăgărășan, you’ll experience dramatic contrasts between green forested valleys and rugged high-altitude stretches close to the summit. The road was constructed in the 1970s as a military project, which is still evident in its uncompromising trajectory through the mountains. Today, it is a haven for road trip enthusiasts, motorcyclists, photographers, and nature lovers seeking authentic outdoor experiences, technically impressive engineering, and some of the most photogenic views in Eastern Europe.
