Transfăgărășan Highway – Cârțișoara

The Transfăgărășan Highway is an iconic mountain road winding over the Făgăraș Mountains, connecting Transylvania with Wallachia through some of Romania's most dramatic landscapes. The road reaches over 2,000 meters in elevation and is famous for its tight hairpin turns, steep climbs, and long tunnels, including the spectacular tunnel under the Bâlea massif. Along the way, views open up to deep valleys, alpine pastures, and sheer cliffs, with Bâlea Lake as a centerpiece surrounded by untouched mountain wilderness. In summer, when the road is fully open, the area transforms into a haven for car enthusiasts, motorcyclists, and nature lovers. Near Cârțișoara, several marked hiking trails start into the Făgăraș Mountains, leading to glacier lakes, waterfalls, and some of Romania's highest peaks.
