About Transfăgărășan – Sibiu - Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania
Transfăgărășan is not just a mountain road but a technical and scenic masterpiece crossing the southern Carpathians from north to south. Built in the 1970s, the road stretches over 90 km with more than 80 hairpin bends, steep serpentine curves, and long tunnels – including the spectacular Capra–Bâlea Tunnel, Romania's longest. Along the way, you'll pass iconic stops like Bâlea Lake, a glacial lake over 2,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by alpine meadows, waterfalls, and dramatic rock formations. The route is open only during the summer months, making the experience extra exclusive for road trip enthusiasts, motorcyclists, and nature lovers. The journey is often combined with a stay in Sibiu, one of Transylvania's best-preserved medieval towns. The historic city center features the Large and Small Squares, the Brukenthal Palace, and the distinctive houses with “eyes” in their roofs. Sibiu boasts a vibrant cultural scene, local restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere, offering a sharp contrast to the wild nature of the mountains. Together, Transfăgărășan and Sibiu create a rare balance of raw landscapes, engineering marvels, and authentic Romanian culture.
