Yogyakarta – The Cultural Heart of Java

Yogyakarta is rightly considered Indonesia's cultural heart and is one of the best places to experience classic Javanese culture in its living form. The city is home to the Sultan of Yogyakarta, who still resides in the Kraton Palace – an active royal complex where visitors can witness traditional court dances, gamelan music, and ceremonies that still adhere to centuries-old rituals. Kraton also serves as a cultural center and a museum for Javanese history, philosophy, and art. Only about an hour’s drive from Yogyakarta is Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is especially known for its intricate reliefs and the spectacular sunrise where mist slowly lifts over the surrounding volcanoes and rice terraces. In the opposite direction lies Prambanan, Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex. The city itself is known for its lively street life, creative environment, and strong craft traditions. Yogyakarta is a center for batik, silver crafting, and arts, and the many small workshops and markets provide insight into local techniques. Street food plays a central role, with specialties like gudeg, satay, and snacks from nighttime stalls.
